Navarre leads an innovative project that promises to change the current landscape of the agri-food sector. Bringing together several of the region’s key players, this ambitious project seeks not only to transform forgotten by-products into valuable resources but also to open new frontiers in health and sustainability.
Funded by the 2023 Strategic R&D Projects call from the Department of Industry and Ecological and Digital Business Transition of the Government of Navarre, the VALSANA Project (VALorization of Agri-food By-products of Navarre) aims to become a benchmark for those who long for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
Since its inception, VALSANA has been dedicated to transforming various agri-food by-products into valuable resources, using a unique combination of biotechnology, green chemistry, artificial intelligence, and omics technologies. This multidisciplinary approach not only promises to optimize resource utilization but also to minimize waste, thereby opening new economic and environmental opportunities.
Its vision is simple yet effective: to sequentially valorize the by-products of different companies in the Navarrese agri-food sector to maximize their potential and create added value across various uses, sectors, and final applications.
This project is led by MOA FOODTECH and involves the participation of the NAVARRE INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION (AIN) and the INSTITUTE OF AGROBIOTECHNOLOGY (CSIC-IDAB), as well as several relevant companies in the sector such as OLEOFAT TRADER, Iniciativas Sostenibles Naturales S.L (ISONATUR), Tratamiento Subproductos Agroalimentarios (TRASA), INGREDALIA, FERTINAGRO BIOTECH, NUCAPS NANOTECHNOLOGY, AND TECH NATURAL OLEO (TNO).
The main objectives of VALSANA include the recovery of strategic elements such as phosphorus, the procurement of high-added-value biomolecules and plant protein, and the valorization of by-products for the production of sustainable biofuels and biofertilizers. These advancements promise not only economic but also environmental benefits, as they diversify the applications of natural resources and reduce dependence on finite natural resources.
Furthermore, VALSANA integrates cutting-edge technologies such as nanotechnology, artificial intelligence, and omics technologies to address challenges in the field of health. Likewise, through the development of insect farming, it seeks to promote more balanced and environmentally friendly agricultural systems.
Its contribution to seven of the Sustainable Development Goals of Navarre’s S4 Smart Specialization Strategy stands out, covering areas such as healthy and sustainable food, the development of green energies, and personalized medicine.
In summary, the VALSANA project is much more than a research project. It is a manifestation of human potential to create a better, more sustainable, and equitable future for all. With its innovative approach and commitment to excellence, VALSANA is paving the way toward a world where the agri-food sector is synonymous with prosperity, health, and sustainability.
